the holy spirit

God's personal presence

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the personal presence of God and is the third person of the Holy Trinity. Jesus promised He won’t leave us or forsake us. The Holy Spirit is a promise and a gift to us. Ephesians 1:13-14

Jesus walked on earth, He was here in the physical form. As Jesus was preparing for his death, he told his disciples (his followers), that he would no longer be with them physically but his Holy Spirit would be. The Holy Spirit is God. He is our Helper Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Counselor, Strengthener, and Standby. The Holy Spirit acts on God’s behalf and will teach us all things. He will also help you remember everything that God has told you. John 14, Romans 8:16.

How do we receive the Holy Spirit?

You have the Holy Spirit now. God's Word says “And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.” Ephesians 1:13-14.

What does the Holy Spirit do?

He acts on God’s behalf. The Holy Spirit guides us in all truth. “The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.”John 16:13-15 The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness and when we don’t know what God wants us to pray for, the Holy Spirit prays for us. Romans 8:26.

Where does the Holy Spirit live? Is He in heaven? On earth?

The moment you decided to place your faith in Jesus, His Holy Spirit lives inside of you. He has made you His home. Jesus didn’t leave us on earth without Him. He gave us His Spirit. We may not see Him but we know He is with us. The beautiful part about it all is the Holy Spirit will never leave you. So that means, wherever you are, He is there also. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

What does being filled with the Holy Spirit look like?

Many things happen when we are filled with the Holy Spirit. Too many to name but here are a few; the Holy Spirit makes us more like Christ. He produces the fruit of the Spirit which are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23We also receive guidance from the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:14Being filled with the Holy Spirit is knowing the power of sin is broken. Romans 6:10-11 Romans 8:9-11. Ultimately, we become more like Christ. Our behaviors and attitude changes. The Holy Spirit is at work to make up more like the Father.

Our prayer for today comes directly from Psalm 143:10. Father teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit so I may look more like you. In Jesus name, Amen.
